5 tips on how to capture the best fall photos

By Amy Wright | Aug 27, 2019

When summer gives way to Autumn and the leaves are changing colors it’s time to turn a new leaf with your home decor. The arrival of fall brings so many opportunities for vibrant fall photos and breathtaking portrait family shoots outdoors. With this season full with bold colors, and crisp memories here are 5 tips on how to capture the best fall photos you’ll want to hang in your home.

Fall in love with your photo

Fall is a great time for taking seasonal, outdoor portraits of yourself, friends or family. The rich colors of the fallen leaves make a beautiful backdrop and create perfect props for your fun fall photography session. If you want to add more contrast to your photos, you can ask your subjects to dress in colors that are complementary to fall colors like purple, blue and green. You can even add some red or gold to make the colors really POP. It doesn't get much better than a framed print of the whole fam surrounded by vibrant colors.

The golden glow

Golden hour has so much to offer in terms of lighting for wonderfully soft and warm photos. This perfect golden opportunity happens directly after sunrise or just before sunset. The beauty in catching an autumn golden hour is that you don’t have to wake up at the crack of dawn to catch it, considering the sun rises and sets later in the day. Getting photos with elongated shadows or dramatic sunrises, and capturing the bright orange, yellow and red colors of the fall make for the perfect canvas prints to add to your home decor.

Look at the big picture

The picture-perfect location is essential when wanting to take a fall-inspired landscape image. Although a high vantage point overlooking the forest is ideal, if you don’t have access to that option there are many other options to photograph. Streams, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, woodland, hills and mountains are all extremely captivating at this time of the year. If you want to make your landscape photography more personal, you can go out with friends and family to capture them playing and enjoying this special time of the year. Fall landscapes make the most stunning canvas prints, so be sure to pack your camera and have your phone ready when heading out on an outdoor adventure.

Don’t fight the light

Have you ever heard of the french term “contre jour”? It means “against daylight” which involves shooting directly toward a source of light and produces backlighting of the subject. This works particularly well with fall leaves because it allows the light to shine through the leaves making them translucent and bright. When having the subjects backlit, it allows you to see the sun filtering around, through and even reveals the beautiful structures nature has to offer.

Harvest the memories

Fall offers many delicious fruits and vegetables that are great for your health, but did you know they also make great photo props? Baskets of apples, squash, haystacks, corn, and pumpkins all offer vivid color and texture to fall photos. We can all admit there’s nothing cuter than a baby in a pumpkin patch. Getting different photos with the same coloring complement each other and can make a great gallery wall or collage print.
